Project Experience

Electrical engineering experience across UK EV infrastructure projects

The projects below present a selection of EV charging schemes personally designed and technically supported by Jonathan across public charging, commercial destinations, fleet electrification and high-power eHGV infrastructure.

They range from individual commercial installations to complex, multi-megawatt charging hubs, covering early-stage feasibility and capacity assessment, DNO and infrastructure coordination, detailed LV distribution design, protection coordination, cable calculations, charger integration and multidisciplinary design development.

Together, these projects demonstrate a practical and technically rigorous approach to EV infrastructure design, with a clear focus on safe, coordinated and buildable electrical solutions.

Leeds Skelton Lake Services eHGV charging hub project
eHGV / HIGH-POWER CHARGINGFleet & Logistics

Leeds Skelton Lake Services, 12-Bay High-Power eHGV Charging Hub

Detailed electrical infrastructure design for a 12-bay eHGV charging facility at Leeds Skelton Lake Services, with charging capacity of up to 350 kW per bay.

The project included multi-megawatt LV distribution, TT earthing, protection coordination, high-load AC and DC cable sizing, detailed underground duct routing and coordination of the charger power equipment.

Project-specific IEC 60287 cable calculations were undertaken to assess the thermal performance of the heavily loaded underground cable systems, including the effects of duct arrangement, grouping, spacing and ground conditions.

A detailed DC leakage assessment was also completed to verify the suitability of Schneider Type A earth-leakage protection upstream of the charging equipment. Manufacturer testing and written confirmation demonstrated that the selected devices would continue to detect AC earth-leakage faults in the presence of up to 1 A of smooth DC leakage, without being adversely affected by DC blinding.

Be.EV taxi charging site
RAPID TAXI CHARGINGPublic Sector

Greater Manchester Taxi Charging Infrastructure Programme

Electrical infrastructure design for a regional programme of dedicated rapid-charging sites delivered for Transport for Greater Manchester through the Be.EV network, supporting the transition of licensed Hackney carriage fleets to electric vehicles.

The programme extended across multiple Greater Manchester local authority areas and included the delivery of approximately 30 to 40 charging sites, utilising Swarco Raption 50 rapid chargers to provide dedicated charging provision for licensed taxi drivers.

The work covered site-specific electrical layouts, charger supply design, cable calculations, protection coordination and the development of suitable protective measures for equipment installed within publicly accessible on-street and car-park environments.

A simultaneous-contact risk assessment was also undertaken to assess the interaction between the charging equipment, vehicles and adjacent street furniture, informing the electrical design and the selection of appropriate protective measures.

E.ON Drive charging hub, York
ULTRA-RAPID PUBLIC CHARGINGCommercial / CPO

Mill House, York, High-Capacity Urban Charging Hub

Detailed electrical infrastructure design for a new E.ON Drive ultra-rapid charging hub at Mill House in central York.

The scheme incorporated four Alpitronic HYC300 chargers, providing high-power public charging within a constrained urban site. The supporting infrastructure included a new HV connection, package substation, high-capacity LV distribution and a 2,500 A main switchboard arrangement.

The detailed design covered charger supplies, protection coordination, fault-level assessment, voltage-drop calculations and the design of heavily grouped underground cable systems. Digital load management was also incorporated to ensure the charging demand remained within the agreed supply capacity.

The wider scope included coordinated provision for site lighting, CCTV, equipment protection and safe operation within the public car park.
