ULTRA-RAPID PUBLIC CHARGING
Cartmel Racecourse Ultra-Rapid EV Charging Hub

Detailed electrical infrastructure design for a new ultra-rapid EV charging hub at Cartmel Racecourse in Cumbria.
The completed scheme provides 3x Alpitronic HYC200 chargers, supplied from a new 500 kVA HV connection and associated substation infrastructure.
The design included the HV/LV supply arrangement, charger supplies, protection coordination, cable calculations, equipment layouts, underground duct routing and earthing design.
A key consideration was the site's proximity to the racecourse and the resulting step and touch voltage requirements. Horses present a particular earthing risk due to their four points of ground contact, meaning permissible potential differences require careful assessment. The final earthing design therefore incorporated an extended substation earthing system running over a significant distance to reduce step and touch voltages to acceptable levels.
The project formed part of Zapgo's programme of delivering reliable ultra-rapid charging infrastructure at destination locations across the UK.
