EV Charging Infrastructure Consultant
An EV charging consultant establishes whether a site can support the charging you intend to install, and produces the electrical design that makes it buildable. EV Design is an independent consultancy working with commercial, fleet, industrial and public-sector clients across the UK.
What does an EV charging consultant do?
An EV charging consultant answers the questions that decide whether a scheme is viable, and then produces the design that lets it be built and energised. That covers the available electrical capacity at the site, the connection route with the network operator, the cable and protection design, and the layout in which the equipment will sit. It is engineering work, and it happens before procurement rather than after it.
The distinction that matters commercially is independence. A consultancy is paid to specify what the project needs; a supplier is paid for the equipment it sells. EV Design designs and specifies — the deliverable is drawings, calculations and applications, not hardware — so the recommendation is not shaped by what happens to be in a catalogue.
When should you appoint a consultant?
As early as the site is being considered. The constraints that decide an EV charging scheme — how much capacity is available, what the network operator will require, how cables can be routed, where the equipment can physically sit — are cheapest to resolve while the layout can still change. Discovering a capacity shortfall after bays have been marked out is an expensive way to learn it.
Consultancy is also useful part-way through a project. Reviewing someone else's design, resolving a DNO query that has stalled, or assessing whether a proposal actually delivers the charging power it claims are all common reasons to bring in an independent view.

Technical work is led by Jonathan Baron BEng(Hons) MCIBSE MIET, with over twenty years in the electrical and building services industry and a specialism in EV charging infrastructure — electrical capacity assessments, DNO and iDNO application support, earthing strategies and load management. He is a member of the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers and sits on its ESG committee.
